The information I provide here is according to websites I have read.
A website pays Google to put the site's ads on Google or Google advertisement lists, and every time someone clicks an ad, the website pays Google for the hit. The money Google makes from this is used to pay employees and pay websites for hosting Google ads. Thus, everyone benefits: The advertising website gets more hits and, in some cases, more customers; Google makes money; and ad-hosting sites make money.
Google of course, have other sources of profit, but this is their main source
